AFRICAN PERCUSSION CLASSES

Rhythm, community and tradition — let the drum guide you

Regular classes at the TocArt school
In La Verneda, Barcelona   👉 Location

In our African percussion classes, you will work on the technique of the djembe and dunduns (kenkeni, sangban, and dununba), delving into the traditional rhythms of the Mandinka/Malinke culture . We will study accompaniments, solo phrases ( djembe solos ), signals ( breaks ), and the structure of each rhythm so that you can understand and perform them with confidence.

We will also develop:

  • Fundamental and advanced djembe technique.

  • Traditional rhythmic language: calls, responses and ensemble dynamics.

  • Patterns of improvisation and solo construction.

  • Coordination and active listening within the group.

  • Cultural context and social function of rhythms in West Africa.

From the intermediate level onwards we will incorporate complementary instruments such as the balafon and other melodic and accompaniment elements, thus expanding the understanding of the Mandinka ensemble.

The classes are conducted by playing in a group, forming a true African percussion ensemble , where you will learn to integrate your instrument with the others and enjoy the collective process.

Throughout the year you will be able to participate in various school activities: dress rehearsals, weekend outings, school festivals and immersive trips to Senegal and Brazil that will allow you to delve deeper into the culture and rhythms we study.
