IBERIAN PERCUSSION CLASSES

Feel the pulse of traditional percussion with a modern touch!

Regular classes at the TocArt school
In La Verneda, Barcelona   👉 Location

Iberian percussion encompasses a wide variety of traditional instruments that have historically been played independently to accompany singing, dancing, and popular celebrations. In this course, we work on integrating all these instruments into a common language, inspired by traditional rhythms but adapted to a contemporary, ensemble approach.

In the classes you will learn:

  • Traditional Iberian rhythms such as the ajechao, sorteao, and corrido maragato, among other characteristic patterns from different regions.

  • Songs from the folk repertoire and their rhythmic application within the ensemble.

  • Specific techniques for instruments such as the tambourine, the square tambourine with beater, the mortar and pestle, the frying pan, the drum, and other folk instruments.

  • Coordination, traditional phrasing, accompaniment techniques, and group dynamics.

  • The cultural and musical context of each rhythm, understanding its origin and function within the tradition.

The goal is to create an Iberian percussion ensemble, delving into both individual technique and the collective performance of arrangements based on peninsular folklore.

The classes are taught by Angelo Magenzane, percussionist with the group Coetus, one of the most influential ensembles in the revival and promotion of traditional Iberian percussion.

Throughout the year, you can participate in school activities such as dress rehearsals, weekend outings, school festivals, and immersive trips to Senegal and Brazil.
